I have only watched one episode of Malcolm in the Middle.  It was Season 6, Episode 10: “Billboard” which first aired on February 13, 2005 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0640287/).

In 2004/2005, Steven went to L.A. to try his hand at acting.  He landed a role as an extra in one episode of a well-known sitcom.  He called to tell me he was going to be on T.V.  So Becky and I waited, and on the big night, made sure we were tuned in with TiVo at the ready to capture his big debut on the small screen.

We watched the episode three or four times, trying to pick him out in the background crowd scenes.  It wasn’t until Malcolm in the Middle hit Netflix that I got to see more of Steve’s performance.   He was out of the frame at 4:3, but shows up pretty prominently in one scene at 16×9.

He didn’t speak, but it was unmistakably him.
